NBC Universal’s 3rd Annual Clear The Shelters Event is coming up on Saturday, August 19th from 10am to 5pm and the Fairfax County Animal Shelter is participating once again. On this day, all adoptions will be fee-waived! If you’ve been considering adopting a new pet, this is the day to do it.  During last year’s one-day event, 60 pets found their forever homes and their shelter’s adoption floor was almost empty. This year, they hope to surpass last year’s number of adoptions and truly clear the shelter!

The normal adoption process applies.

*Steps to Adopting a Pet:

  1. Look at adoptable pets online, and when you see one you want to meet and possibly adopt, come on in to the shelter to visit with your prospective pet.
  2. Once at the shelter, walk through to see available pets and then visit with the ones you are considering adopting. A volunteer or staff member will facilitate the visit and tell you more about the pet you’re visiting.
  3. Once you decide that you would like to adopt, head to the main lobby to complete an adoption questionnaire.
  4. Then, speak with one of our adoption counselors to ask any questions you might have, and hear/read all of the available behavioral and medical history of the pet you want to adopt.
  5. Complete your adoption! Most pets can go home the day they are adopted, but some must be picked up one or two days later after their spay/neuter appointment.
  6. Note: Some pets are in foster homes, and that is noted in their bio. If you are interested in a pet who is in a foster home, please email the shelter to arrange a visit.
  7. Note: Some special needs animals will be adopted on a best fit basis, rather than the usual first-come first-served.

*Adoption Requirements:

1. Must be at least 18 with a current photo ID

2. Have current rabies vaccines for currently-owned cats and dogs

3. Have proof of license for currently-owned dogs

4. Show proof of home ownership OR lease OR pet addendum OR notorized letter from landlord/home owner
